Clear your back-to-work blues with patterned tights

We hate to bring this up before you’ve even been to your New Year’s Eve bashes, but it’s not long before the festivities will all be over and it’s time to return to the world of work again.

No more getting up at whatever time you like and nodding off in front of the telly in the afternoon - but you could ease yourself back into the real world by adding some cheery accessories to your office attire.

If you’re used to wearing trousers all the time, why not try a skirt and some patterned tights? Fashion hosiery, as long as it’s not too garish, can look great with smart work clothes.

Amy Verner, fashion expert at the Globe and Mail, agreed. She said that some patterns will add a welcome splash of colour while still looking professional, with black or grey being the most suitable.

"High statement hosiery needs to be offset by classic pieces. So if you’re going out on a limb with a print, make sure to keep everything else basic black," she urged.

We love Emilio Cavallini’s Metallic Pie De Poule Tights, which have a great houndstooth print with a splash of metallic threading for a classic but funky look.

If you’re nervous about trying patterns and prints, why not try going for a different colour opaque instead? Purple can be a great alternative to brown or black in winter and will ensure you look both capable and fun in the office!

The key to wearing coloured tights? Keep it simple!

Unless you’ve been asleep under a rock for the whole of 2009, then you’ll be aware that everyone who’s anyone has been rocking brightly coloured tights over the last few months.

They are a fantastic trend, as they can totally transform an outfit with minimal effort - you can even make old outfits look like new thanks to some cleverly applied hosiery.

However, if you’re going for a particularly bright colour, then you should definitely keep the rest of your ensemble simple.

Style expert Courtney Hollands, writing for Boston.com’s StylePhile, said that when she wore yellow legging recently, she did so with a plain grey jumper dress in order to avoid looking like Will Ferrell in Elf, keeping accessories down to a minimum and footwear innocuous.

"Go for a dark, solid dress and leather boots or flats … Be bold, friends, but don’t overdo it," she insisted.

Sound advice indeed - if you’ve found the perfect plain outfit and now want to jazz it up with coloured tights, you could try Jonathan Aston at MyTights.com.

This company makes an array of coloured hosiery sure to suit your every mood!

Catherine Zeta Jones stays warm in ribbed tights

She was brought up in the Welsh Valleys, so perhaps it’s no surprise than Catherine Zeta Jones knows how to dress for cold weather.

The actress was spotted by the Daily Mail (here) walking her dog in New York recently, looking snug as a bug in a rug thanks to a warm winter coat and some cosy wool ribbed tights.

Her trainers didn’t exactly match, but she was taking her pooch out in deep snow after all! She returned to her usual glamorous self later that day in a furry coat and boots - but she kept the wool ribbed tights on, proving that they really are a winter essential!

We’ve got a range of wool and ribbed tights here at MyTights.com in an array of colours and finishes.

They will all keep you feeling warm and looking good, but for a similar style to Catherine’s, perhaps go for Aristoc’s Cotton Texture Cable Tights.

2009 - The year of hosiery!

The weather outside may be frightful, but you don’t have to stay by the delightful fire in order to stay cosy this festive season - because 2009 has truly been the year of all kinds of hosiery.

Some of the fashionistas at Sugarscape.com noted that while Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties usually mean that we girls freeze in the name of fashion, this is not the case this time around, because tights and socks of all kinds are the must-have accessory for all sorts of outfits.

"There’s socks, tights, footless tights, thigh highs, knee highs, opaque, wool, there’s even leg warmers! You name it, they’re out there," they enthused.

Henry Holland’s Mock Stockings tights and black over the knee socks were recommended for daring divas, while patterned tights and knee high socks were also suggested as being bang on trend.

We just love over the knee socks - for a really luxurious pair, try Wolford’s Velvet Over Knees from MyTights.com. These are made from beautiful velvet yarn and are also really strong and durable.

Cool lace tights will spice up your LBD

How many times have you been out shopping and bought a great new colourful dress for a special event, only to bottle out at the last minute and go to the party in your trusty LBD?

Hilary Alexander, fashion director at the Telegraph, said she’s seen it happen more times than she’s had hot dinners, because everyone has an LBD that makes them feel fabulous with minimum effort.

However, since so many girls do this, the chances are you’re not going to be the only one wearing a black frock at whatever event you’re going to.

That’s why she recommends that you should spice it up by adding some choice accessories.

You could opt for a statement belt a la Kate Moss, or some luxurious hair ribbons like Victoria Beckham.

Or, you could go for our favourite accessory and opt for lace, cobweb or fishnet tights.

The perfect choice could be Jonathan Aston’s Rose Glass Lace and Opaque Tights, which have a beautiful floral lace pattern up the back of the leg and a purple panel on the front for ladylike glamour.

And as you can see from the picture, they go great with an LBD!

Statement tights - anything goes this season!

Obviously, we’ve been raving about all kinds of hosiery and funky fashion tights for years, but we’ve loved 2009 as the entire world of fashion has joined in.

The celebs really got on board with statement tights after they were all over the catwalks back in the spring and now it’s winter, they are making even more of a splash on everyone’s legs than the rest of their outfits!

The Mirror’s Celebs magazine spotted a whole host of famous faces rocking patterned tights this month, with Henry Holland for Pretty Polly a popular choice for Agyness Deyn, Una from The Saturdays and, erm, Cheryl from Hollyoaks.

However, there were so many other styles and designs that it proved really anything goes - Juliette Lewis wore red tights with glittery circles, Taylor Swift sported herringbone-patterned lovelies and Sadie Frost went for white lace to create a classy, Jackie O-style look.

There you go - proof that you should definitely experiment with patterned tights if you’ve never tried them! They’re fun, bang on-trend and they might even keep your pins warm as you head from party to party this Christmas.

If your Christmas holidays are anything like ours, they usually amount to lots of stuffing your face and no time whatsoever to go to the gym.

To be honest, a walk on Boxing Day to stop us going stir crazy is the closest we get to exercise over the festive season.

It doesn’t matter - it’s Christmas, we tell ourselves. However, this backfires slightly when we look somewhat bulgy under the outfits we planned to wear and envisioned ourselves looking fantastic in.

Thankfully though, all is not lost. Thanks to a miracle-working invention named Spanx, we can scoff that last choccy without even thinking about our waistlines until the New Year.

Danica Lo, author of How Not to Look Fat in the US, told the Fayetteville Observer that she highly recommends the Spanx Hide & Sleek Full Length Slip.

"Other shapers can cause muffin top, but this slip won’t exacerbate one problem while solving another," she pointed out.

You can then go on to dress your best and emphasise the positive, she said.

We agree, the Spanx slips are fantastic - there is also a strapless one for more versatility under bandeau dresses. To get the most smooth silhouette, always choose the size you usually wear - too small will constrict you and too large won’t give you full support.

She may be only 16, but we’ve been admiring Taylor Momsen’s style choices more and more lately.

We spotted the Gossip Girl arriving on location in New York to film more new episodes looking casual yet sexy in sheer stockings and suspenders, a short skirt, a loose-fitting white t-shirt and a mannish shirt (see, we told you they are going to be huge!).

She then went into her trailer for make-up and emerged as Jenny Humphrey in lace tights, lace-up boots and a baggy wool cardie.

This just shows that you can wear so-called evening hosiery during the day, as long as you tone it down with more volume and layers on top.

If you want to steal Taylor’s look, we’ve got a range of stockings and suspenders on the MyTights.com website, as well as hold ups and mock stockings if you don’t want to hassle of suspenders.

We’ve also got Jonathan Aston’s Sweet Roses Lace Tights, which are a dead ringer for the Gossip Girl’s on-set legwear.

Frankie Sandford from the Saturdays ignored the cold weather over the weekend in order to rock a very skimpy outfit for a night out (here).

The 20-year-old sported a sheer blouse with no bra underneath and leather hotpants to London’s Mayfair - but we were more interested in her hosiery.

Like plenty of celebs this autumn and winter, she was wearing mock stockings tights which looked like the ones Henry Holland designed for Pretty Polly.

These have been hugely popular and have also been spotted on the legs of Lily Allen earlier in 2009.

We just love them here at MyTights.com and think they are a great way of adding some spice to an outfit - plus they are less hassle than real suspender belts.

However, we think someone should have told Frankie that less is more - these funky fashion tights will speak for themselves and didn’t really need the see-through top and bondage gear to create headlines!

Cheryl Cole does chic in sheer tights

She seemed to be somewhat under fire lately following the row over her hair extensions, but Cheryl Cole is sure to put herself back in the media’s good books with an excellent choice of outfit this week (see it here).

The tiny Geordie looked chic and winter-ready at an X Factor press conference, wearing a smart black jumper, black miniskirt, patent heels and black sheer tights.

It’s the grand finale of the competition this weekend and Cheryl has been keen to show her support for her last contestant Joe McElderry, posing for lots of photos with the smiley 16-year-old.

However, she also showed that she definitely means business with this smart look! We agree that sheer tights give a really elegant edge to daytime winter outfits and officewear.

For some really luxurious hosiery, try Wolford’s Individual 10 Tights from MyTights.com, which have a transparent look and are also really strong for their weight.
